Public Speaking Programme

To some people, the idea of speaking in front of a group can be absolutely terrifying! Some individuals actually spend a great deal of time and energy trying to avoid ever having to do it; even at great cost socially and professionally. There are even support groups worldwide to help people deal with severe enough cases. That is why the Canadian Improv Showcase created a customized workshop to help people overcome this fear.

The public speaking programme is an innovative way to get over the fear of speaking or acting in front of a group of people. Through the joys of improvisation, participants are taught to focus more on what they are doing and less on who they are doing it for. They are taught how to distract themselves from their fear and enjoy the rush of a live performance. A variety of techniques and exercises are utilized for this programme, so it is best to inquire for specific details as this programme is highly customized depending on the type of group it is to be done with. An example of how this programme can be run is as follows:
The workshop starts with an introduction to improvisation and how it can help with a fear of public speaking. From there a dialogue with participants is implemented to assess individual needs for customization of the event. From there, the professional actors will perform a short set of improv letting the workshop participants act as audience and offer the needed suggestions. Following that the floor is open to any questions or comments and then the participants are welcomed to try improvising with each other and the actors. During this time group activities will be utilized to create comfort for the participants. When and if the participants feel comfortable they will be given the opportunity to do things individually to continue to build their confidence. One thing to keep in mind is that the Canadian Improv Showcase is always very mindful of an individual’s comfort zone and will be respectful of each participant’s needs as much as possible.

When inquiring please do your best to include information regarding size of group, location and date as well as any other pertinent information. To perform this workshop only a small empty space is required. A formal stage is welcome but not necessary. A classroom or meeting room will do just fine as long as there is at least a minimum 20’ x 20’ open space available. The workshop can be video taped for an additional fee if requested.
